When I tried to render my self portrait it showed up as a black box. I don't know what to do.

Electromagnetic sensitivity

I chose this post from the new aesthetic because I've met someone who claimed to have EMS and I thought she was nuts but not necessarily because of this specific point. She had a lot of interesting ideas about society and rearing children but I am particularly fascinated by the concept of being effected by invisible waves of energy. I also really liked the portraits of the people associated with this theory, they seem very isolated by how they're placed and posed, yet as a series they seem connected. Very interesting.

1) The author talks about a video art hierarchy establishing television as too commercial a medium to be a consistent art form, does this hierarchy hold true today? How blurred are the lines of art and commercialism and what, if anything, would be considered art that is on television?


2) Why did video artists in the 80s and 90s switch from the more abstract content of the formative years of the medium to seemingly more personal narratives?

European Rendez Vous 'Supdate

I already have all my footage, clips from some random and not so random events I've been collecting and shooting for the past 5 years. It would take too long and be an extra laborious step to upload them all to youtube so here are a couple that I will edit, overlap and put whatever audio part of "European Rendez-Vouz" I select to. It's a really psychedelic feeling video, luckily I have many weird psychedelic friends who can really ham it up. The audio won't be there so listen to it off...or not.

THROBBING GRISTLE

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I whittled it down to 2 videos, but I had trouble deciding between David Wojnarowicz & Tommy Turner's "Where Evil Dwells",http://www.ubu.com/film/wojnarowicz.html , and Chris & Cosey's "European Rendez-Vous" http://www.ubu.com/film/cc_european.html . Mainly because the music in Evil is really amazing, but also because the murder the video was based on was so gruesome and thematically compelling. The idea that some kid murdered somebody because of the music he listened to is very relevant I would say. BUT Throbbing Gristle is a major influence, and personal favorite, of current lo-fi electronic music like Ariel Pink plus the imagery in the video is almost playful but I think I just like the colors so I will be going with a segment or representation of the Chris and Cosey video!

I originally wanted the video to be more elaborate , having the mouth eat all the content and then blurt out escape! But given my newbie status to photoshop and the fact that the original collage had most of the layers this was what I could achieve. I believe the the sentiment is the same, inner desire or fantasy given to us through the boob tube.

First is the worst

My partner and I did the assignment wrong, obviously, still 10 hours of labor have gone into my little fantasy montage so here you are.

Autumn used graphically real images and I used fantastically colored images. If you look closely there is a girl inside the woman's mouth watching television, the images are spilling out and around until she is surrounded by escape. All of this is also inside of a television, the ultimate escape in America and around the world. The images may be portrayed as what the girl wants or dreams about in life but is it really what she desires or is she conditioned by societies model of consumption and escape?
